The Power of Words by Pastor Randy Booth
Ephesians 4:29-32
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Words are symbolic of thought, intent and action. Words are themselves a form of behavior. God’s words are powerful. As His words go forth they change the world, creating or generating new things, sustaining old things, and even resurrecting or regenerating the dead. As creatures who are made in the image of God, and having been given the unique ability of language, our words are also powerful; they too are forms of behavior that reveal our character. Our words can edify or wound: violent words are a form of violence; soothing words are a form of comfort. The old saying, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never harm me,” is false. Words regularly do a great deal of harm and we’ve all felt the sting of their blows. Words have the power to bless and the power to curse. They accomplish actual righteousness or else they commit actual sins.
